Quincy Watts is one of the most popular and richest Sprinter who was born on June 19, 1970 in Detroit, Michigan, United States. He failed to break 45 seconds in 1994 and 1995. In 1996, he was seventh at the US Olympic trials and finished in 45.64. He was overshadowed in 1995 by Michael Johnson and was appointed as the head coach at Taft High School. He was an assistant track coach at Harvard-Westlake School after his time at Taft. Watts is an assistant coach at the University of Southern California for Men’s and women’s sprints. He trains professional athletes like Willie McGinest, Curtis Conway and Curtis Conway. Conway was Watts’ high school competitor.
He won the Olympic 400m title in 1992, his most successful year. Lee Evans’ Olympic record of 43.86 was broken twice by him. He set it at altitude during 1968 games in Mexico. In his semi-final, he ran 43.71, and then went on to run 43.50 in final. He was part of the 4×400 m relay team and ran the second leg in 43.10 which broke the world record by 2:55.74.
Watts won a silver medal at the 1991 World Championships in 4×400 relay. He then went on to win gold at the 1993 championships. Watts was the second leg of the team that took nearly a second and half off the World Record. This race is still the World Record. Watts was supposed to challenge Michael Johnson and Butch Reynolds in the 1993 Individual 400m Final. However, his custom-built Nike shoe fell apart as he came off the last turn. He ran on and finished fourth. In track circles, “doing the Quincy Watts” has been used to describe poor Nike shoe quality since that incident. This has also affected Nike’s quality control.
