Janet L. Kavandi Biography
Janet L. Kavandi is one of the most popular and richest Astronaut who was born on July 17, 1959 in Carthage, Missouri, United States. Kavandi was again the Branch Chief for International Space Station (ISS) Payloads and Habitability Branch. Kavandi was responsible for crew training, operations safety and habitability on the International Space Station (ISS). She also managed software and hardware development and reviews. Kavandi was also responsible to coordinate international partners for visiting vehicles, and other operations. Kavandi was appointed Deputy Chief of Astronaut Office in 2005 and held that position until February 2008. Kavandi was then appointed Deputy Director of Flight Crew Operations and Director of Flight Crew Operations Johnson Space Center.
In March 2016, Kavandi succeeded Jim Free as the Center Director at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
In September 2019, she retired from NASA and started at Sierra Nevada Corporation.
Kavandi was chosen by NASA as an astronaut candidate in December 1994. She reported to the Johnson Space Center in February 1995. After a year of training, Kavandi was assigned to the Payloads and Habitability Branch where she assisted with payload integration for International Space Station. Kavandi was a mission specialist for STS-91 (June 2, 2012 – 1998), the 9th and last Shuttle-Mir docking missions. This mission concluded the joint U.S./Russian Phase 1 program. After the mission, Kavandi worked as a Mission Control Center CAPCOM (spacecraft communicator). She was a part of STS-99 (February 11, 2001 – February 22, 2000), which was the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. This mission mapped 47 million miles of Earth’s surface and provided data to create a three-dimensional topographical map.
Kavandi graduated in 1982 and accepted a job at Eagle-Picher Industries, Joplin, Missouri as an engineer in the development of new batteries for defense applications. Kavandi accepted a job as an engineer at the Power Systems Technology Department, Boeing Defense, Space & Security, Seattle, Washington in 1984. As the Lead Engineer of Secondary Power for the Short Range Attack Missile II and as the principal technical staff representative in the design and implementation of the thermal batteries for Sea Lance, and the Lightweight Exo-Atmospheric Projectile, she was the most senior engineer. She also supported programs such as Space Station, Lunar, Mars Base Studies, Inertial Upper Station, Advanced Orbital Transfer Vehicle and Get-Away Specials. Minuteman, Air Launched Cruise Missile and Minuteman were some of the other programs she supported. While still employed by Boeing, she was admitted to graduate school at the University of Washington in 1986. She began her doctorate work in analytical chemistry. Her doctoral dissertation was about the development of a coating that indicates pressure. It uses oxygen quenching porphyrin photoluminescence to create continuous surface pressure maps for aerodynamic test models in wind-tunnels. Two patents have been granted to her work on pressure-indicating paints.
Kavandi subsequently worked in the Robotics Branch, where she trained on both the shuttle and space station robotic manipulator systems. On her most recent mission, she served aboard STS-104/ISS Assembly Flight 7A (July 12–24, 2001) on the tenth mission to the International Space Station. The shuttle crew installed the joint airlock “Quest” and conducted joint operations with the Expedition 2 crew. Kavandi had trained in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory for spacewalking, but she did not take a spacewalk during STS-104.
